As we make our way through February, I’ve found myself noticing some subtle—yet powerful—signs that spring may come a little early this year. While the calendar tells us we’re still deep in winter, nature has its own way of whispering what’s to come.
Squirrels on the Move 🐿️
If you’ve seen more squirrels darting about lately, you’re not alone! Their sudden burst of energy and busyness is one of the oldest folk signs that a seasonal shift is near. Squirrels are highly attuned to the earth’s rhythms, and their increased activity often means the deep freeze is loosening its grip.
That Mossy Spring Scent 🌱
Have you caught a whiff of something different in the air? To me, it smells like moss—damp, earthy, and full of life. This scent is a sure sign that the ground is beginning to thaw. It’s as if the earth itself is breathing a little deeper, waking up from a long winter’s night slumber— with morning breath.
The Worm Moon vs. the Snow Moon 🌕
We’re approaching the Worm Moon on March 3, 2026—a powerful full moon named for the time when earthworms begin to reappear, nourishing the soil and inviting robins back. This moon marks the true turning point toward spring. It’s a striking contrast to February’s full moon, the Snow Moon, which is all about winter’s endurance and the quiet hush of snowfall.
While the Snow Moon reminds us of winter’s challenges, the Worm Moon brings hope, renewal, and the promise of new growth. When I see the squirrels and smell that mossy air, I know we’re already on the cusp of change—nature’s own forecast for an early spring. All of this has me impatiently waiting on Crocus flowers.
What Signs of Spring Are You Noticing?
I’d love to hear what little signals you’re picking up from the world around you. Send an email or share your own observations when you see me out and about—let’s welcome this early spring together! 💚
